Maintenance Engineer - Permanent

Luton - £35 - £38K + benefits


A highly successful company that imports food and distributes it across the UK (retail) who are extremely passionate about its business. They have spent the last 5 decades supplying the UK retail marketplace by nurturing and building relationships. They are recruiting a Maintenance Engineer to process, carry out and monitor site preventative maintenance, breakdowns, and repairs. Reporting to the Head of Maintenance you will also ensure the general factory/building maintenance is in order and carry out regulatory and compliance checks. It would be an advantage if the Maintenance Engineer had worked in a fresh food environment (not essential) and had knowledge of continuous improvement techniques. 

It is important the successful Maintenance Engineer will ensure that all processes and procedures comply with the operation and statutory requirements. Compliance with health & safety policy, procedures, working practices, and risk assessments. Supporting team members in role-specific and standard operating procedures and safe working practices.

Duties & Responsibility 

  • The Maintenance Engineer will effectively process, carry out and monitor site preventative maintenance, breakdowns, and repairs.
  • To troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of electro/mechanical machinery.
  • Respond to production equipment breakdown, fault find and rectify.
  • Carry out planned preventative Maintenance, breakdowns, and repairs.
  • Carry out repairs on buildings and facilities.
  • Carry out regulatory and compliance checks.
  • Making cost-effective and informed decisions within the level of authorisation and competence.
  • Adapt to changing requirements of the business and adopt a flexible approach to changing duties and activities as required and promoting such culture in team members and colleagues.
  • Provide specialist knowledge to identify problems and patterns and help find solutions and resolve issues promptly.
  • Ensure all accidents/incidents and near misses are reported.


  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to accurately handle small projects and tasks to balance priorities to tight deadlines.
  • Conversant with shop practices
  • Capable of using related resources and a safe and effective manner including maintenance equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Excel)

Maintenance Engineer Technical Skills

  • Can read electrical and mechanical drawings and fault findings.
  • Experience working in a fresh food environment (desirable)
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques
  • Previous manufacturing Maintenance Engineer experience (3 years)
  • Qualification/training MEWP, FLT (desirable)

Other Attributes:

  • Good level of physical fitness to undertake lifting, climb cat ladders, and work in tight spaces.
  • Dexterity, mobility, good eyesight, and hearing.
  • Attention to detail with a logical and methodical approach.
  • Working as part of a small team
  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm and mature manner
  • Self-motivated and reliable.
